What is vocational rehabilitation for Hawaii Workers?
Hawaii law requires most employers to provide workers’ compensation coverage for its employees. Workers who have accidents or illnesses that arise from their work and who are unable to return to their usual occupation may have the right to receive the benefits of career counseling, testing, training, and job placement. Hawaii’s Disability Compensation website provides Guidelines and a list of Certified Rehabilitation Providers.
Who qualifies to use our services?
The State of Hawaii’s Department of Labor determines if an injured worker qualifies for assistance during recovery from a work-related injury. Assistance is designed to help workers return to the work force. Hawaii State allows qualified workers to choose a certified vocational rehabilitation counselor to guide worker’s through the process. Injured workers can refer themselves to the counselor of their choice for Worker’s Compensation Vocational Rehabilitation services. We will be happy to discuss this with you.
How can counseling help you?
Almost any person who experiences a work-related injury or illness will have their life impacted by that event. Since each person is unique, a workplace accident is likely to affect persons in different ways.
In our experience, we have seen that injured workers typically need time to adjust after an injury or illness. We can help workers begin that process.
The first step is usually for a worker to understand how their life has changed, how their earnings will be affected, how to discover their options, and how to take the next steps to vocational recovery.
We can help identify what resources are available and assess any personal skills and experience that can help a person move forward. Each person’s work goals are important so together we develop a customized vocational plan to get a person back on track with their career.
Typically, we exchange ideas, discuss goals, and solve problems. If the worker can return to work, we plan steps to return to either the same job, modify an old job, take a new assignment at an old job, or find a compatible job elsewhere. And if applicable, this could be a chance for some to explore a completely new type of job that suits that person well.
